Marica and Jonothan’s story:
Marica grew up in the Slanghoek area of the Boland and moved to the UK in 2004, where she met Jon in the summer of 2009 at a mutual friend’s “braai” in Canterbury:
“Never thinking I’d marry an Englishman, I soon realised that we shared a love for a South Africa as Jon had worked for an NGO in Cape Town and we had so much to talk about. We spent a snowy Christmas together with Jon’s family in the North of England and shortly afterwards returned to South Africa to visit my family. Whilst we were exploring the beautiful Slanghoek Valley that we stopped for lunch at the Opstal Estate. Jon instantly fell in love with the mountains that I had cherished since my childhood, making it an easy choice for our wedding reception when, 2 years later we decided to tie the knot.
My sister, Roulé, had the fantastic idea to tell our story as an illustrated poem in our wedding invitation. We wrote the poem and Roulé did a great job illustrating each verse. She was also responsible for many of the design elements at the wedding – table settings, confetti bags etc.
As you can imagine, trying to organise the wedding from the UK was going to be challenging and we are so grateful for all the help provided by my family and friends, especially my mum, Louma, who stepped up as wedding coordinator and “tannie” Susan, who was responsible for all the wonderful flower arrangements at the church and reception (we keep telling her she should ‘go professional’!).
We had the most amazing day with all our friends and family and have lovely memories that we will cherish forever. “
